Our Coop
Here is a tour of our coop!
Our coop has a 4 by 6 foot run and a 4 by 2 foot coop. Altogether, it can hold up to 10 chickens. Our insulated coop has 3 nesting boxes and a window. We use sand to cover the floor of the run and wood shavings to cover the floor of the coop. Our chicken run is covered in mesh on all sides, and the chicken wire underneath the structure of the coop is buried under the ground to prevent predators from digging their way in. The ceiling of our coop is covered in galvanized steel to protect the chickens. We have an automatic door between the coop and the run. There are a total of three doors, one to enter the run, one in between the coop and run, and one on the back of the coop.

Our coop is located in our backyard on the edge of a hill. Previously, we had a trampoline between our house and the coop, so we installed a fence between the coop and the end of our yard. Because the hill was sloped, the fence couldn’t be angled well enough to have a firm attachment to the ground. We used chicken wire to prevent predators from getting under the fence.
However, on a tragic night, a predator entered the fence from underneath and killed many of our chickens. We then installed a new fence next to the trampoline between our house and coop, which ensured that the fence could remain implanted into the ground. We also ran electrical wire around the fence to prevent predators from approaching.
We are constantly adapting and changing our coop to protect and ease the lives of our chickens.
